چکیده

Background Bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) are associated with aneurysms of the ascending aorta (AAA). It is unclear whether these aneurysms are caused by tissue alterations of the aortic wall or by alterations of blood flow in the ascending aorta due to the bicuspid valve morphology. In this study we analyzed the phase contrast 4D flow characteristics in normal tricuspid aortic valves (TAV) in a porcine model and compared them to the 4D flow patterns after different types of surgical bicuspidalization.

Intraindividual validation of 4D flow measurement against 2D flow measurements in aortas with bicuspid or tricuspid valves by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR)

Background Theoretically, blood flow in the ascending aorta of patients with helical flow patterns, as in patients with bicuspid aortic valves (BAV), are underestimated by routine two dimensional (2D) phase contrast velocity encoding (PC-VENC). Four dimensional (4D) PC-VENC is theoretically not influenced by flow patterns. Hence, both, 2D PC-VENC and 4D PC VENC should result in similar blood fl...

Dilatation of the ascending aorta in patients with congenitally bicuspid aortic valves

INTRODUCTION The cause of ascending aortic dilatation occurring in patients with congenitally bicuspid aortic valves was investigated. METHODS Flow patterns through human aortic roots with congenitally bicuspid aortic valves as well as through porcine constricted aortas were studied in a left heart simulator. Vibration was recorded as a measure of turbulence in the post-stenotic segment. Hist...

4D flow MRI demonstrates altered aortic hemodynamics in patients with right-left and right-noncoronary bicuspid aortic valve fusion patterns

Background Altered aortic hemodynamics associated with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) have been implicated in the development of aortopathy in patients with congenitally altered valves[1]. Most studies have focused on the most common “right-left” bicuspid aortic valve (RL-BAV) fusion pattern [2]. This study assessed the effects of valve morphology on aortic 3D blood flow in cohorts with the most c...

Hemodynamics in bicuspid aortic valve relatives with trileaflet aortic valves compared to normal controls using 4D flow MRI

Background Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is known as the most common congenital anomaly and its complications (ascending aortic aneurysm, dissection) can lead to noticeable morbidity and mortality. There is increasing evidence that, in addition to its genetic background, changes in aortic hemodynamics may play an important role in the development of aortopathy in these patients. Studies have show...

Aortic coarctation augments changes in thoracic aortic hemodynamics in pediatric and young adult patients with bicuspid aortic valve

Background Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a congenital abnormality that is often associated with aortic coarctation. Evidence suggests this combination may increase the risk of secondary aortic complications compared to patients with BAV alone.[1] Altered aortic hemodynamics likely induce vascular remodeling[2] and may contribute to these complications. No study has investigated the impact of a...
